McCree, Abdullah, Answers At Safety?
John Lynch is gone. It is tragic. Though we have to move on and keep our chin up through the rest of the season. His departure may hurt the team but it will not destroy us. We can still be playoff threats.
Though it makes us ask the question about whether we are going to be able to hold down the position at Safety this next year. I question whether Marlon McCree and Hamza Abdullah are the answers at Safety. They are both decent players but I have a right to worry.
McCree is a decent Safety who is great at nabbing Interceptions. But he is also the kind of player who will ruin a play. He will not guard well enough and before you know it, your opponents are in the Red Zone. It is something to worry about. But he is also a play maker. He can turn a play into an INT and stop a drive. He is very topsy turvy.
Abdullah is only an okay Safety. He is not a play maker. But he will not hurt a play either. So there is not much to say about him. He is okay and can once in a while deliver a hard hit, but you do not want him to be the best Safety on your team. That is just sad.
So here is the question, can we get through a season with them starting at Safety? I am honestly worried. I hope that I am pleasantly surprised but I think that there is room to go, “Eh…I’m not so sure about these guys.” We do have options behind them such as Marquand Manuel who I pray to god we do not need to go to. Sorry I just do not like him. Or, there is the other option which I would not be as opposed to.
We could start Josh Barrett. He is a late 7th round pick and I do not think that it would be great to start him, but he is an option. You never know when you will be surprised by a player like him. He seems to be decent at Safety and I like what I have seen from him. But for now I would lay off.
We could move a Cornerback over there such as Domonique Foxworth who has played the position before, but the way he is playing Cornerback I do not want to make him do that just yet. I might want to see Foxworth take over Dre’ Bly’s spot. I am not sure yet, but so far he has played so well and impressed me so much I would not feel bad him taking over Bly’s spot.
Another option is Jack Williams. Sometimes we like to move Corners over to the Safety position. Especially young ones. They are easy to mold to a new position and I would be interested in seeing if we could do so with Williams. He sure got some recognition after that INT against the Cowboys. For now I think we have better options but I would not count out this one just yet.
So now for the million dollar question, Can they hold down the fort at Safety. “No.” As much as I hate to say it, we will need to mix and match our Safeties through out the season just so we do not let one player be in charge of such an important position. So for now until I see something better I would be weary of McCree and Abdullah for now.
