Larsen Now Starting At FB

When Peyton Hillis was drafted it looked like he would be the FB of the future but it seems that might be another Broncos draft pick.

The Broncos drafted Linebacker Spencer Larsen this year and converted him to a FB. Now it seems that he has earned the right to start over Hillis at it.

When he started this week there had been some question whether the move was temporary because Hillis, the No. 1 fullback through four games, missed practice last Friday and Saturday to attend his grandmother’s funeral services in Arkansas.

It turns out this move will be permanent of course for the time being. ”Someone had asked me if it was because of the death in his family, and I said no, we were giving it to Larsen,” Mike Shanahan said. “We want to give him the opportunity to show what he can do. Anybody that hits like that on special teams can hit those linebackers (as the lead blocker).”

It does make sense. He has had some huge hits on Special Teams. I can only imagine what he can do as a blocker. I have been critical of his move to FB but if he plays this well it makes sense that he should start. While I like Peyton Hillis, as long as Larsen outplays him I am fine with whatever is best for the team.

Also, if you noticed the production that Pittman had with Larsen blocking there is good reason that he should have that role. I just question his speed if we run the ball with him. For now I am good with this move.

They are both very good FB’s. Hillis was sweet, and Larson seems good too.
The only thing is-the same thing you said, how well can he run the ball? I know Peyton was pretty good at it…

I dont feel that they see what all Hillis can do…This guy can do a lot more for this team than block. If you watched him in college, he can do it all. The Broncos don’t know what they’re missing out on. The kid can catch, run, and block. The Broncos are crazy if they don’t use all of Hillis’s capabilities, not just as a lead blocker but as a pass catcher also. I see Hillis as a dual threat H-back…I think he could have the same impact as someone like Dallas Clark or Chris Cooley. I sure hope they dont give up on him this quickly

I agree that Hillis is good. But the Broncos system usually calls for a Fullback in more of a blocking scheme and if you have seen Larsen, he is a better blocker. Other than that you are right overall Hillis is better.
